Goldenrod

Solidago virgaurea
Family: Asteraceae
Fire effect on plant
Immediate fire effects on European Goldenrod are unreported, however in a closely related species (S. canadensis), plants are top-killed but underground rhizomes survive (Coladonato 1993).
Key traits
Regeneration after fire can be via underground rhizomes or soil-stored seeds in closely related species (S. canadensis; Coladonato 1993, Young 1986). Seeds are wind-dispersed.
Plant response to fire
Low- to moderate-severity fire enhances the frequency and cover of a closely related species, S. canadensis (Medve 1984). Based on this, we may expect a similar response in European Goldenrod.
Timing of life history
A perennial. Seeds likely produced from second growing season. Flowering July to September.
Conservation status
None.
