Herb robert

Geranium robertianum
Family: Geraniaceae

Fire effect on plant

There is little published evidence on the immediate response of herb robert to fire. However, its shallow root system make it likely that it is killed by fire.

Key traits

Herb robert is a prolific seeder, and has the capacity to distribute seeds great distances through ejection and via animal movement (Tofts, 2004). It is unclear how fire affects seed viability but seeds may easily travel into burned sites and colonise.

Plant response to fire

There is little evidence about how fire affects herb robert populations. One study by Smith-Ramírez et al (2021) found regular burning (2 or 3 times in 10 years) caused herb Robert populations to decline, whilst a one-off burn did not significantly reduce abundances.

Timing of life history

Biennial species. Seed produced in the second growing season. Flowering to April to September.

Conservation status

None.
