Marsh hawk's-beard

Crepis paludosa
Family: Asteraceae

Fire effect on plant

We found no published information about the direct effects of fire on marsh hawk’s-beard, but it is likely top-killed with underground rhizomes surviving.

Key traits

Marsh hawk’s-beard is rhizomatous and can spread laterally via clonal growth (Klimešová et al 2017). Fire effects on seeds are not described; however, the seed bank of this species is short-lived (<1 year; Thompson et al 1997). Seeds can be dispersed by animals.

Plant response to fire

The response of marsh hawk's-beard is not described in the literature. To recruit in burnt areas, it may rely on off-site seed sources due to its transient seed bank.

Timing of life history

A perennial. Seeds likely produced from second growing season. Flowering July to September.

Conservation status

None
